Opening up to foreign ownership?

March 11, 2010

The House of Common’s Standing Committee on Industry, Science, and Technology will be conducting a review of Canada’s foreign ownership restrictions under various legislation including The Broadcasting and Telecommunications Act. Chase, McNish, and El Akkad report in The Globe and Mail that Industry Minister Tony Clement “intends to move relatively quickly on further liberalization, but will first launch public consultations on how to proceed on measures beyond satellites”.

Opening up the telecom and wireless sector to foreign entrants and capital is controversial and desired by some, as this 2008 article from the Globe and Mail describes, while stakeholders like the CEP Union are opposed to opening up the sector to foreign companies. The latest debates come on the heels of the Globalive case.
