Just who comprises the ‘chattering classes’?

January 21, 2010

Responding to the popularity of the Facebook group Canadians Against Proguing Parliament,  Industry Minister Tony Clement claimed that only the ‘chattering classes’ are concerned about prorogration.

David Eaves reports in The Globe and Mail on a survey conducted by Pierre Killeen in partnership with The Rideau Institute which reveals that older, politically engaged voters who are frustrated by the Harper Government’s decision to prorogue Parliament have been avid uses of Facebook.  Said the report’s authors,. Pierre Killeen and Steven Staples:

We would suggest that the survey indicates that the Facebook group “Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament” matters. Its members vote, they are politically engaged, they are older rather than younger, and they are serious about this “new” way for them to participate in politics.
