Canadians Head to Facebook and Tell the PM Not to Prorogue

January 14, 2010

Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament

A University of Alberta student, Christopher White, started a Facebook page, Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament, as a way to urge fellow Canadians to encourage them to contact their MPs to get back to work and organize local ralleys in protest. Over 180,000 thousand have signed on.

Responding to media critiques that contested the efficacy of online protesting,  Michael Geist writes that “Facebook or digital advocacy alone will [not] change the decision to prorogue. .. But in tapping into the underestimated exasperation with political leaders who think that the public could care less about political games, it holds the potential to keep the issue alive in the public’s mind.”
