What Counts as Canadian in Telecom?

October 30, 2009

The CRTC released a decision October 29 that ruled that Globalive Wireless LP was in violation of Canadian federal ownership rules and could not proceed to roll out its new cellphone service in Canada. Globalive’s revenue has been put up by Egyptian company, Orascom Telecom Holding SAE. Globalive is expected to appeal the decision to the federal cabinet.

In the Globe and Mail, Grant Robertson comments that “The decision carries significant implications for the telecommunications industry.Had the controversial structure been approved, industry players said it would have opened the door for Canada’s telecom players to seek more foreign investment.”
