25-year old Joel Tenenbaum, a Boston University graduate student, was ordered to pay $675,000 to four record companies for illegally downloading and distributing music online. He admitted to  downloading and distributing 30 songs. The US court ruled that he acting willfully, and ordered him to pay $22,500 for each incident of copyright infringement. If the verdict stands Tenenbaum will file for bankruptcy. He was represented by attorney Charles Nesson, a Harvard Law School professor, who said that he would appeal the decision, arguing that he was not allowed to argue the case based on fair use.
